Do not be caught out because of a failure to appreciate the connection between salt and hypertension.

Salt is a very important element in our diet and has been in use for many thousands of years as both a preservative and to give added taste to our food. Indeed, in spite of the fact that many people in the West take it for granted, in a significant number of countries it is a major economic commodity and many readers will no doubt remember the important role played by salt in bringing British rule in India to and end in the middle of the last century.

Unfortunately however salt can also be a major contributory factor when it comes to the problem of high blood pressure.

Salt is a compound composed of sodium and chloride and when we are considering high blood pressure it is the quantity of sodium we eat that needs to be watched.

Initially it may seem that controlling your salt intake is merely a question of monitoring the quantity of salt which you put into your food while you are cooking and which you add to your food at the table. But, the true problem rests in the fact that most of the salt in our diet is found in the processed foods which most of us purchase and eat every day.

To ensure that you minimize your risk of high blood pressure you should keep your intake of salt under the government’s recommended daily consumption figure of 2,400 milligrams and here are just a few tips to help you do just that:

? Do not put salt on the|Remove salt from your} table. As long as you are getting a properly balanced diet your food will contain enough salt without any need to add more while eating, so simply remove the salt from your table.

? Learn how to to read food labels. Food labeling laws and most foods now carry nutritional information including the quantity of sodium which the food in question contains. You need to read the label very carefully though as often the sodium figure shown will apply to the whole pack or tin and sometimes it will apply to a single serving.

? Buy sodium free or low sodium products. An increasing range of foods today come in sodium free or low sodium options and, where possible, you should choose these over the regular product.

? Purchase low salt snacks. The majority of us like to snack but try to stick to things such as vegetables and fruit and, if you cannot live without your crisps, purchase varieties which are low in sodium or salt free.}

The third qigong/chi kung practice for hypertension? Diet.

The fact that most of us not only can afford to eat beyond the basic needs of survival, but also we enjoy eating rich foods, create ideal conditions for high blood pressure, a common problem in developed countries.

Here is a list of foods to reduce or avoid:

Sodium-rich foods such as processed foods

Since low potassium elevates sodium levels that can lead to hypertension and potassium is known to lower blood pressure, replace table salt with potassium-rich salt. Also, replace sodium-rich foods with potassium-rich foods.

Foods rich in potassium include apricots, avocados, bananas, cantaloupes, honeydew melons, kiwi, peaches, oranges, watermelons, raisins, prunes, dates and figs. Also, pumpkins, tomatoes, greens, potatoes, artichokes, beans, lentils, salmon, sardines and cod.

Tobacco

Caffeinated products, such as coffee and chocolate

There have been studies that show consuming dark chocolate can reduce blood pressure without significant weight gain. On the whole, however, foods containing caffeine can elevate stress levels and keep you up at night.

Alcohol

Alcohol can cause high blood pressure, but when consumed in moderate amounts also help the heart. Therefore, restrict yourself to no more than one or two glasses of red wine a day.

Sugar and other sweeteners, including maple syrup, molasses, brown sugar and artificial sweeteners

Sugar and other sweeteners have been known to raise blood pressure in some people. Developed countries consume too much sweets in their diet, leading to obesity and diabetes, both of which are also closely linked with hypertension. Aspartame, that is found in some artificial sweeteners, can raise your blood pressure.

Try to replace foods containing simple sugars (that are absorbed directly into the bloodstream) with complex carbohydrates that break down more slowly, such as found in fresh fruit.

Raw honey is also a good sweetener, because moderate amounts have been known to help lower blood pressure. However, if you are diabetic or hypoglycemic, you still need to watch your blood sugar.

Animal fats, red meat and internal organs

Traditionally, qigong/chi kung practitioners were predominantly vegetarians, consuming very little, if any meat. If you are not willing to change completely over to a vegetarian diet, at least reduce your consumption of meat: limit yourself to white meat and fish. Eliminate animal fats, red meat and processed meat, such as sandwich meat, from your diet.

Other things you can do:

Replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats, such as extra virgin olive oil. Increase your fiber, as found in whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables. To avoid overcooking and destroying essential nutrients, steam or lightly stir fry your vegetables, and eat plenty of leafy green salads.

One particular vegetable to note in the fight against hypertension is celery. Traditional Chinese medicine have included mung beans, honey, water chestnuts, turnip and Chinese celery as a dietary treatment for hypertension. Also, studies have found consuming four stalks of celery a day will lower blood pressure significantly.

Another food supplement that helps lower blood pressure is the essential omega-3 fatty acids. Two of them are found in fish oils, particularly in salmon, sardines, tuna, halibut, mackerel, cod liver and lake trout. A third fatty acid is found in flaxseed, soy products, canola oil and nuts.

Your diet should also include foods high in magnesium, as found in soy products, legumes, seeds, nuts, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, such as bananas, avocados and dried apricots.

People suffering from hypertension are also lacking in calcium. However, you don’t have to consume dairy products to get your calcium. In fact, milk is not necessarily your best source of calcium because it is low in magnesium, a mineral required for your body to absorb calcium. If you take dairy products, consume only low-fat dairy foods.

Foods rich in calcium include soya milk, leafy greens such as collard greens, baked beans and canned salmon.

Finally, other foods not mentioned but also helpful in the fight against high blood pressure include reishi mushrooms, Chinese white fungi, shitake mushrooms and blueberries.

Any treatment for hypertension must include a healthy diet, and throughout history, qigong/chi kung has always been practiced in line with a diet of herbs and foods that promote health and wellness.

Look forward to my next article on the fourth qigong/ci kung practice for hypertension ? herbs and related supplements.

Have you ever felt a sudden rush of blood when you are nervous or excited? Are these conditions related to hypertension?

What is Hypertension?

Commonly referred to as high blood pressure, hypertension is a medical condition characterized by the elevation of blood pressure. There are different kinds of hypertension but the most common is the arterial hypertension. This condition could also be classified into two – essential and secondary.

Essential hypertension refers to the condition when there is no specific medical cause that could explain the occurrence. On the other hand, secondary hypertension is caused by secondary conditions like kidney malfunctions or adrenal tumors. When not treated immediately, this condition could become persistent and could cause a lot of other ailments especially those that concern the heart. It has known to be the common risk strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and arterial aneurysm. It is also said to be the leading cause of chronic renal failure. As an effect of hypertension, a person who frequently suffers such is known to have lesser life expectancy.

Though medicine poses specific ranges of blood pressure that are considered to be at the level of hypertension, the condition is still relative to a person. Sometimes, hypertension is dependent on how a patient can sustain certain blood pressures. When the blood pressure rises 50 percent above what is known to be the normal to a person, it already calls for a treatment.

Signs and Symptoms of Hypertension

Hypertension is only determined through a blood pressure measurement equipment and reads the systolic and diastolic of the blood. There is actually no identified sign of hypertension; rather, it varies from one person to another. Some people report to have experienced headaches, fatigue, dizziness, blurring of vision and facial flushing.

One of the misconceptions of hypertension is its association with stress, mental tension and anxiety. These conditions may affect the flow of the blood but those could not alone cause the imbalance condition of the blood flow. However, accelerated hypertension is closely associated with somnolence, confusion, visual disturbances, nausea and vomiting.

Being in a hypertension condition is not permanent; and it could not be severe enough to cause symptoms. Symptoms only surface when signs of end-organ damage are determined or are possible; otherwise, the condition is still considered accelerated hypertension. Malignant hypertension, on the other hand, is caused by increased intracranial pressure. These could be diagnosed through retinal examination.

Another misconception is that hypertension is known to be only experienced with people in old age. However, this condition could also occur in children and teenagers. Obesity in children is known to be a factor of developing the occurrence of such phenomenon. The detection and intervention in childhood hypertension could be determined though early evidence of the development of atherosclerosis. Aside from that, temperature could also affect the condition in children especially that they are in the height of an active lifestyle.

Complications of Hypertension

Hypertension , as mentioned earlier, could cause a lot of complications. Alone, it is not considered as illness since it is temporary. However, this condition increases the risk in developing other health conditions. Complications include cerebrovascular accidents or strokes, heart attack, heart failure, damage to the retina of the eye and renal failure.

Hypertensive encephalopathy describes the transitory migratory neurologic symptoms associated with the cancerous hypertensive country in hypertensive emergency. Hypertensive encephalopathy refers to a comparatively quickly evolving syndrome of serious hypertension in association with serious worry, sickness, and vomiting, visual disturbances, convulsions, altered psychological position and, in sophisticated cases, stupor and coma. Hypertension is more rife in dark folk, exceeding the frequency in new cultural minority groups. The incidence of hypertensive encephalopathy is lowest in light-colored folk.

Hypertension is more rife in men than in women. Hypertensive encephalopathy mostly occurs in middle-aged individuals who have a long-standing history of hypertension. The hallmark of encephalopathy is an altered mental state. Depending on the type and severity of encephalopathy, common neurological symptoms are progressive loss of memory and cognitive ability, subtle personality changes, inability to concentrate, lethargy, and progressive loss of consciousness. Other neurological symptoms may include myoclonus , nystagmus , tremor, muscle atrophy and weakness, dementia, seizures, and loss of ability to swallow or speak.

Treatment is symptomatic and varies, according to the type and severity of the encephalopathy. Pharmacologic agents selected for use in hypertensive encephalopathy should have few or no CNS adverse effects. Avoid agents such as clonidine, reserpine, and methyldopa. Anticonvulsants may be prescribed to reduce or halt any seizures. Changes to diet and nutritional supplements may help some patients. Nitroprusside is frequently used as initial therapy because of its rapid onset and short duration of action. Nitroglycerin has been used to provide a rapid reduction in blood pressure complicating myocardial ischemia.

Hypertensive Encephalopathy Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Dialysis or organ replacement surgery may be needed.

My life is about health, actually natural health! That is what I do and have done for almost 7 years straight but I have been an advocate of natural health since I was young. And my company’s natural health doctor, our researchers, and myself have studied high blood pressure (also called hypertension) for almost seven years and we’ve discovered one good thing about it- you can naturally treat hypertension with no medication.

However, millions of people spend billions of dollars seeing doctors, paying for visits, getting check-ups and buying expensive medication, but never realize that God created the miraculous human body to run near perfect and cure itself naturally. And the travesty is not only the financial aspect of the ’silent killer’, but by lowering your high blood pressure with synthetic medication you could be hurting your body by not curing the cause.

The ‘Silent Killer’

If you don’t know already, high blood pressure got its nickname, the silent killer, because it does exactly that? it will kill you with NO WARNING. In fact, over 50,000 people died last year because of this disease. I recently read one article which called it a ‘widow maker’. And I couldn’t agree more; we all know someone who has lost a loved one because of this deadly disease.

But in the process of slowly killing you, it could cause well over one hundred health problems including obesity, stroke, cardiovascular disease, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney stones, diabetes and numerous other diseases. But I can guarantee your doctor did not tell you that the miracle pill will not treat any of these diseases. In fact, the path of HBP medication will lead you back to the hospital for another visit, another disease to treat and anther pay check cashed by the medical industry. A little fishy, right?

If you do the math (and thousands are already sold), you could save literally multiple thousands of dollars and add decades to your life by naturally treating high blood pressure.

The Good Thing about High Blood Pressure

By now you know there is nothing good about high blood pressure. Whatever career; whatever race; whatever weight; whatever stage- you can treat high blood pressure naturally.

One of the best things about health is it seems that I learn something new everyday. In fact, I spend part of my week researching the latest rave in natural health and it always amazes me to hear about the human body. In fact, my personal faith is seriously strengthened each week learning something new about our bodies. And you would be amazed at some of the e-mails I have received from customers who have dropped drastic points (even stages) in weeks from simple natural health tips that work. Funny their doctors forgot to mention these tips?

Here is word from our company’s personal health doctor, Dr. Scott Saunders.

“As a medical doctor with over ten years of research in the field of nutritional and alternative medicine, I’ve seen a great deal of misinformation. As I’ve read through the reports by Barton Publishing, I’ve been impressed by how well-researched and comprehensive these reports are. There is no hype or pushing a specific type of therapy, just well-researched alternative treatments and some anecdotes. People are different so there are a variety of ways to heal illnesses. These reports take this into account, giving you many options and providing the information you need to heal yourself and be independent of drugs and “experts.”

Naturally Treat Hypertension

Treating your high blood pressure naturally is different from the traditional method of popping a pill and PRESTO! Many of our customers will try all of the treatments and drop points in weeks or months. Yet, many of our customers might try one to two different treatments and will drop points. Whatever the case, we recommend the following treatments.

1.	Your body! Your body must be treated as one of your most important assets. I like the famous health clich

Valerian is the generic name of a root herb used as a sedative substance to treat insomnia and anxiety disorder. For more than one thousand years, Valerian root has been used as a tranquilizer to calm people by helping them alleviate stress.

The biochemicals of valerian are similar to the modern tranquilizers and mood elevators being prescribed by doctors in the treatment of anxiety and stress. Based on results of medical studies conducted on humans and animals, it has found great support in its use as treatment for high blood pressure.

As far as herb dosages are concerned, the absence of standard medications poses some problems since its contents may vary with the way it is prepared. Nevertheless, the suggested daily use of the valerian plant material should not exceed; for standardized extract – 30 to 400 mg; tincture – 1/2 to 1 teaspoon; 300 to 500 mg in capsule or tablet forms and 1 to 2 cups if taken as tea. Further, in its preparation as tea,it is suggested that the pot be kept covered to prevent the oils from escaping.

As an herbal medicine, there are no prescribed regulations in its manufacture; hence, the presence of contaminants or other counter-interacting drugs is possible.

Although the utilization of valerian has scientific support, it can cause excessive urination and should not be used by pregnant women, by persons operating machines, and people under the medication of antidepressant drugs.

Regardless of the scientific support, the use of valerian has no evaluation from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as to its effectiveness, safety, and purity.

The most common side effects are difficulty in breathing, excitability, headache, sleeplessness, recklessness, dilated pupils, and irregular heartbeats. In case any of these symptoms are experienced while taking valerian, the user is advised to discontinue with its use and seek medical intervention.

On the other hand, valerian roots have no side effects considered as common among synthetic sedative drugs, such as addiction and morning sickness or hangovers. Some medical practitioners even prescribe valerian roots to ease the symptoms of withdrawal from sedative drugs; usually it is recommended to be taken on a daily basis to be effective as opposed to ?when needed? basis.

Today, valerian is primarily prescribed in treating people with sleeping problems or insomnia, anxiety syndromes, muscle spasms, menstrual cramps or intestinal cramping.

As an herbal medicine, consulting an herbalist physician as a precautionary measure should be observed before taking valerian, especially if making a transition from the use of a current sedative drug. In addition, you should first seek your doctor?s approval, in case you are considering valerian roots as your treatment for high blood pressure.

While you might develop it you can easily lower or control it. The best way to prevent developing it is to keep a close eye on it from the beginning.Older adults may be more prone to developing hypertension but if you start at a young age you can prevent it easier. There are a few things you want to watch for that cause high blood pressure. This is why we develop high blood pressure because we are not aware of what is causing it.

Weight plays a major role in developing high blood pressure. Overweight people are more likely to develop high blood pressure but do not be discouraged. Losing as little as ten pounds can help your blood pressure significantly.

Once you lose a measly ten pounds just imagine how much easier it will be to lose even more. A great way to keep losing and maintain a healthy weight is by a healthy diet. Your diet factors in to developing high blood pressure as well.

High amounts of salt and sodium intake can cause hypertension. Try to limit your meals on salt and opt for other seasonings instead. There is a wide variety of seasonings available so you are sure to find something you really like.

Also try to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet. Eating more of these will help your blood pressure not to mention you will feel healthier as well.

Do you use tobacco or drink large amounts of alcohol? If so, this could be why you have developed high blood pressure. Both of these can raise your blood pressure so if possible try to quit or at least cut back on your use and consumption. This will significantly help lower or maintain a normal level of blood pressure.

African Americans are more prone to develop hypertension. It starts at an early age and can be more severe. African Americans also have a higher death rate from kidney disease and stroke than white Americans. Even so, you can still treat high blood pressure effectively.

Do you exercise regularly? If not you might be at risk for developing hypertension than those that do regular exercise. Luckily you can easily fix this by doing physical activity for at least thirty minutes a day. You might say, “I don’t have thirty minutes a day to set aside.” While you may not have thirty minutes all at once to set aside, you could probably find it easier to set aside ten minutes at a time.

If you find yourself stressed very easily over anything and everything you could easily develop high blood pressure. Yes, stress is a factor of high blood pressure. Stress is very common for many people but easily treatable. Is there something you enjoy doing that relaxes you?

Consider picking up a hobby that you find relaxing and lets you de-stress. Do this whenever you feel stressed to the max and do it often. Keeping your stress level low will help keep your blood pressure low as well.

Last but not least, certain medications can cause you to develop hypertension pressure. Are you on medications? You might consider talking with your doctor about their side effects and if they cause high blood pressure. Every time you start a new medication you want to ask your doctor about this.

It is never too late to take better care of your health so consider starting today. Keeping control of your blood pressure will help lower your risk of a stroke or heart and kidney disease. Talk with your doctor about any concerns or ask any questions you might have.

Hypertension, referred to as high blood pressure, HTN or HPN, is a medical condition in which the blood pressure is chronically elevated. It was previously referred to as nonarterial hypertension[citation needed], but in current usage, the word “hypertension”[citation needed] without a qualifier normally refers to arterial hypertension.

Hypertension: Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

One of the most dangerous aspects of hypertension is that you may not know that you have it. There are generally no symptoms of high blood pressure, so you usually don’t feel it. In fact, nearly one-third of people who have hypertension don’t know it. The only way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to get your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. This is especially important if you have a close relative who has high blood pressure.

Causes of Hypertension

Race. African-Americans are more likely to develop high blood pressure than their Caucasian counterparts.

Gender. Men run a greater overall risk for developing high blood pressure than women do. However, women who are postmenopausal, especially if 20 pounds or more overweight, are at risk for developing high blood pressure.

Primary, or essential, high blood pressure accounts for 95% of all cases of hypertension.3Secondary high blood pressure, which is caused by another disease or medicine, is less common.

Restrictive cardiomyopathy

Dilated cardiomyopathy

Mitral stenosis

Mitral regurgitation

The other major type of hypertension, termed Secondary Hypertension, has an identifiable cause. It is due to disease. For example, kidney (renal) hypertension is due to high blood pressure within the arteries that supply blood to the kidneys. The underlying cause is kidney disease or conditions like atherosclerosis, which narrow or block the renal arteries. Secondary hypertension may also result from hormonal imbalances, particularly in the kidney’s adrenal glands.

Experts believed that this system evolved millions of years ago to protect early humans during drought or stress by retaining salt and water and narrowing blood vessels to ensure adequate blood flow and repair injured tissue. With industrialization, however, this system wreaks havoc on modern humans by intensifying the effects of high-salt diets and sedentary lifestyle. Of particular importance in these harmful responses are the hormone aldosterone and a peptide (which are components of proteins) called angiotensin II.

Treatment of Hypertension

The goal of treatment is to reduce blood pressure so that you have a lower risk of complications.

There are many different medicines that can be used to treat high blood pressure. Such medicines include:

Alpha blockers

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors

Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)

Calcium channel blockers

Beta blockers. These medications reduce the workload on your heart, causing your heart to beat slower and with less force. When prescribed alone, beta blockers don’t work as well in blacks — but they’re effective when combined with a thiazide diuretic.
